INTERNATIONAL MUD DAY

A little late… but here it is, our wonderful celebration of “INTERNATIONAL MUD DAY”!
We were so lucky with the weather, a beautiful sunny Melbourne winters day!
We started out by eating some mud… well, that’s what we called it anyway. A yummy chocolate fountain and some marshmallows for dipping… the kids loved it!
Then we headed out for some seriously messy fun.
Some children enjoyed making up a batch of “Wombat Stew’… drawing on their memory of the ingredients used by Dingo in this much loved story.
In went big blops of billabong mud…
Feathers…
Flies, bugs and creepy-crawlies…
Gum nuts (and a few acorns!)…
And there you have it, the perfect batch of “Wombat Stew” (minus “…that fat wombat!”).
The children sang as they mixed up their brew…
Wombat stew
Wombat stew
Ooey gooey
Yummy chewy
Wombat stew
Throwing big blops of mud at a canvas target was an enormous hit (… or sometimes miss! I have the stains to prove it!)
The children clearly regarded this activity as “a little bit naughty” and we witnessed some wonderfully wicked laughter! (especially when the mud ended up on Karen’s pants!)
… and then, some exquisitely squelchy, slimey, messy muddy finger painting!
The children’s “Wombat Stew” made it’s way onto the canvas… and well, a few more feathers were definitely needed!
The children have been collecting Banksia cones as they have fallen from a tree in our playground over the last few weeks and these were incorporated into their mud cooking.
Kate and Brianna experimented with some muddy dishes. For Kate, it was an all in sensory experience, but Brianna, well, she was a little more tentative.
Oh, and then there was the squishy, sticky, slushy clay table. Such a lovely gooey texture squished between fingers!
And this is the face of a little boy who had a sensational chocolatey, muddy day!
Here is a link to an activity that helped some of our more tactile defensive children get ready to participate in mud play:
