THE MAGIC OF CHILDREN'S PLAY!'

Our vegetable garden is slowly but surely starting to grow.  The sweet peas have germinated…

… and so have our beans!

One little fellow aptly described the day of germination as, “their birthday!”  The germination process has been so exciting that it has triggered the desire amongst some of the children to get right back into planting.  Mmmm… but what, and where?

Just a day later, two little girls burst through the door at preschool with packets of Freesia bulbs in their hands.  “Look Karen,” their excitement bubbling forth, “Flowers!  Daddy got them.” So we quickly hunted out a pot from the shed and planted them up.

What a delightful sensory experience they will be when they flower!

For a long time now I have been thinking that it would be great to have an old wheel-barrow to plant some herbs in.  A  quaint little feature alongside our vegetable garden.  Well amazing things do happen don’t they? By chance, someone chose to dump an old wheel-barrow and ladder in the car-park beside our preschool fence.  So with the ‘finders-keepers’ rule in mind, I wheeled it through the gate one day as the children watched on excitedly.

It was moved into place …

… and some potting mix was added.

Then it was time to plant some more seeds.  This time Coriander, Basil and Parsley.

The seeds were watered in…

… with a little water saved for Mr Chubby’s flowers!

Ah, job done!

Although he never smiles, we know Mr Chubby loves it when we sit and keep him company at lunchtime.

Autumn or Fall, depending on which part of the globe you live, is a beautiful time of year.  Particularly so in our glorious hometown of Melbourne. Every year I look forward to our playground displaying the most gorgeous fiery colours for us to enjoy.  Here is a little playscape I created for the children with an Autumn theme. Of course it is no match for the great outdoors, but the children do find these little playscapes fun.  Just another avenue to foster children’s learning about seasonal change.

Of course the children like to add their own props, so here come some Thai dancers!

Makes perfect sense in their imaginary world!

But the greatest Autumn joy… to play with those masses of falling leaves!

A pile of Autumn leaves is simply irresistible for any child.  Just try to keep them from it!

After planting up our Vegetable Garden  the children became concerned about the birds and bugs that may attempt to make a meal out of our seedlings.  It was decided that a Scarecrow was what was needed!

So armed with a couple of wooden sticks, stuffing and a hessian bag, we fashioned a body.  As we worked his name became apparent.  Laura gave his hessian tummy a big cuddle and said, “I love you Mr Chubby!” and that was it.  Mr Chubby became his name.

The children said that he must have a ‘cross face’ to scare away the birds.

So together they sewed on button eyes and a nose, with an angry mouth and eyebrows.

“He doesn’t scare us,” said Anabel, “because we are humans”.

“Now he looks like a real gardener,” said Laura, “because he has gardening gloves.”

Most days we see Mr Chubby receiving  cuddles from the children.  He is a much-loved scarecrow. 🙂

We have just completed a collaborative art project that has seen all of our children connect and participate with each other demonstrating a spirit of community and cameraderie.

First we selected colours to complete some roller painting…

… followed by some collage.

Then some printing and string painting to finish off.

Both works of art are now up on display in the children’s room.

A few years ago (2009), the then 4 y.o. group created the beautiful artwork below.

They are now on display in the children’s bathroom.

Projects such as this are not just about the creative process.  Most importantly, they promote the development of, “a sense of belonging to groups and communities and an understanding of the reciprocal rights and responsibilities necessary for active civic participation” (VEYLF).
