THE MAGIC OF CHILDREN'S PLAY!'

If you take a look at the cupboards behind Grace, you will see 4 very old (40 years) cupboards a tad worse for wear.  An area well and truely ready for a make-over by our wonderful maintenance officer Daryl.  He completed this job for half the amount that we had been quoted by only charging us for the materials!  His time and effort… free, but actually priceless!  We are going to miss him next year!
Wow, wow, wow… what a difference!
Heaven!
Look at all the bench space!
Everything in it’s place and so easily accessed!
Look no clutter!
We are fortunate to have two large storage rooms as well as this lovely wall of cupboards so I would have to say we are very fortunate.  Daryl will be working on improving the design of these rooms over the next few months…. so exciting!

SIMPLE PLEASURES!

We love these big logs located beside our sandpit.  They are so versatile and have been used by the children in so many different ways.  They serve as a bench top for cooking, a step up to the leaves (and in spring, blossoms) above, a place to sit and ponder or chat, additional support for sandpit constructions, a cubby, and of course, a great surface to leap from!
Ready, set, go!
The simple pleasures of life!
A lovely way to share and cooperate with your friends and to help develop a real sense of belonging.
What might seem a little daunting to one child alone, can be achieved with the power of team work.
The joy expressed was heart-warming.
A little late… but here it is, our wonderful celebration of “INTERNATIONAL MUD DAY”!
We were so lucky with the weather, a beautiful sunny Melbourne winters day!
We started out by eating some mud… well, that’s what we called it anyway.  A yummy chocolate fountain and some marshmallows for dipping… the kids loved it!
Then we headed out for some seriously messy fun.
Some children enjoyed making up a batch of “Wombat Stew’… drawing on their memory of the ingredients used by Dingo in this much loved story.
In went big blops of billabong mud…
Feathers…
Flies, bugs and creepy-crawlies…
Gum nuts (and a few acorns!)…
And there you have it, the perfect batch of “Wombat Stew” (minus “…that fat wombat!”).
The children sang as they mixed up their brew…
Wombat stew
Wombat stew
Ooey gooey
Yummy chewy
Wombat stew
Throwing big blops of mud at a canvas target was an enormous hit (… or sometimes miss! I have the stains to prove it!)
The children clearly regarded this activity as “a little bit naughty” and we witnessed some wonderfully wicked laughter! (especially when the mud ended up on Karen’s pants!)
… and then, some exquisitely squelchy, slimey, messy muddy finger painting!
The children’s “Wombat Stew” made it’s way onto the canvas… and well, a few more feathers were definitely needed!
The children have been collecting Banksia cones as they have fallen from a tree in our playground over the last few weeks and these were incorporated into their mud cooking.
Kate and Brianna experimented with some muddy dishes. For Kate, it was an all in sensory experience, but Brianna, well, she was a little more tentative.
Oh, and then there was the squishy, sticky, slushy clay table.  Such a lovely gooey texture squished between fingers!
And this is the face of a little boy who had a sensational chocolatey, muddy day!
Here is a link to an activity that helped some of our more tactile defensive children get ready to participate in mud play:
Well we have certainly been thinking about mud!  Here the children are using black and brown paint with cars to create tyre tracks on paper.
For Brianna, it was all about making patterns…
But for Kiara and Caitlyn it was all about the lovely mucky mess!
They were over-heard chanting, “Mud, mud, mud, mud…” as their trucks zig zagged across the paper.
I think they are going to really enjoy “Mud Day”.
And here it is:
