THE MAGIC OF CHILDREN'S PLAY!'

Our Xmas concert this year was sensational!
The children made all their own props…
…and sang with gusto!
This year I discovered the most wonderful little book on a visit to the OXFAM shop (one of my favorites).  It is a new rendition of a well known song.  The book comes complete with a CD…
… and a percentage of sales flows back to global conservation. Great!
*(Some of our parents were also inspired to purchase the book for home)
We’ve got the whole world in our hands…
She’s got the sun and the moon in her hands…
He’s got the mountains and the valleys in his hands…
She’s got the plains and the deserts in her hands…
He’s got the lakes and rivers in his hands…
She’s got the trees and the flowers in her hands…
He’s got the birds of the air in his hands…
She’s got the fish of the sea in her hands…
He’s got the towns and the cities in his hands…
We’ve got the whole world in our hands…
Our children absolutely loved this book and were often over-heard at preschool and at home singing the song as they were engaged in play.
When we suggested to the children that we could perform this story for our Xmas concert, their excitment was contagious!  They concentrated their efforts on deciding what props were needed to tell the story, found materials and resources (with some staff suggestions thrown in!)  and created some beautiful birds of the air, fish of the sea… etc.  Such an enjoyable experience for the children and staff.
We believe that our children will be great future care-takers of our world!
One of my favorite blog sites is http://www.teachertomsblog.blogspot.com/
Not only for his creative ideas but also for his ability to articulate much of what is really important in the life of children.
Now I have to own up to stealing this idea straight off his blog site!  Again I engaged our grandfather Brian, to have a go at making Tom’s wooden construction set.
And of course, the children thought it was brilliant!
And all made from recycled materials.
Now I just need to find some lovely wicker baskets for storage.
Thanks Tom… and I have my eye on your ‘Cookie Tree’ for next year!
I still find it amazing to think that a teacher living and working in Seattle, whom I have never met before, can have such a great influence on what happens in a preschool in Melbourne Australia!

OUR CRANE

We have discovered some great little finds at our local ‘Aldi Store’ from time to time.  This little wooden dock play set was one such find.
Notice the ‘googled’ images of docks on the shelving behind. ‘Google Images’ and a laminator, fantastic!
A great tool for bringing the world into the preschool environment.
The children absolutely love this little set… loading and unloading ships, delivering containers to warehouses, factories and homes.
But, when ‘tuning’ into the children’s play…
…we realized that it was the cranes that had really captivated their interest.
And this is where Brian comes into the equation.  We have a grandfather at our preschool who drops in and visits us at least once a week.  Even though his grandchildren have long since moved on, he loves to come in and help us out with a bit of maintenance work from time to time.  Unfortunately for him, but lucky for us, I have also discovered that there is not much that Brian can’t create when he puts his mind to it.
So, I asked Brian if he thought he would be able to make a crane for the children… well the next day, the crane was delivered to some very excited children!
And as you can see…
… they were fascinated with it!
It now lives in our block corner, and tends to feature in the children’s play on a daily basis!
How lucky are we!?  Brian is a wonderful contributor to our preschool community and we greatly appreciate his desire to help make the preschool a joyful place for our children to be.
